New arts space survey data was published by the City of Somerville this week (Arts Space Needs Assessment Survey, OpenData, July 2026). One finding stood out to us, and we wanted to share it. What This Year’s Survey Shows The survey asked artists across disciplines whether their space needs are currently being met. MEETv9 is back—a night where artists from all disciplines come together through improvisation and performance. This is a space to collide sound, movement, and image, and to explore new collaborations across disciplines. Participants choose a primary “space” to focus their practice: Names will be drawn to form spontaneous ensembles—duos, trios, quartets—to improvise and perform together. Visual artists are encouraged to bring video, projection, lighting, or other elements to integrate with live performance. Practical info: Artists & observers welcome. Pay what you can. This is a chance to experiment, perform, and connect across disciplines in real time.

SomArt provides essential rehearsal and performance space for performing artists in Somerville, uniquely bridging long-standing gaps in the city’s arts infrastructure. Launched in 2021, the municipally run program supports artists from ideation through performance by offering professional, movement-safe spaces designed for a wide range of creative practices. SomArt Spaces: A Network of Affordable Rehearsal Spaces in Your Own Backyard

Over the past 3 years Somerville Arts Council has been building a network of affordable, accessible rehearsal and performance space for dance and theater in Somerville. Currently, these spaces include 3 spaces in the Somerville Armory, and 1 space in Boyton Yards at the “Hive”. SomArt has over 215 lead artists who utilize these spaces for their rehearsals, workshops, classes, and performances. Many more artists inhabit the spaces as part of lead artist creation and production teams.
