Walkthroughs
Yes. Although the general procedures for access, use, care, and closing are similar across spaces, each space has its own specific flow that must be learned independently — including spaces you haven’t previously booked, even if you’re a returning user.
–
There are different walkthroughs for rehearsal and performance uses?
+Yes — be sure to select the walkthrough that matches how you plan to use the space. Signing up for the wrong one means you won’t be approved for your intended use.
–Walkthroughs are only offered once a month — why, and what if I miss one?
+Walkthroughs are scheduled monthly to align with space availability, staff capacity, and the efficiency of a group session over individual one-offs. If you miss a scheduled walkthrough, you’ll need to sign up for the next available one. Plan ahead — registering early gives you the best chance of booking space on your timeline.
–Walkthroughs only seem to be offered on weekdays. I work during the day — is there another option?
+Walkthrough times are intentionally scheduled during lower-demand hours to keep evenings and weekends available for artists to book. Unfortunately, we’re not able to offer alternative times at this point — we have one part-time staff member, and walkthrough scheduling has to balance space availability, staff capacity, and protecting prime booking slots for the full artist community.
–ACCOUNT & REGISTRATION
My account is inactive. How do I reactivate it?
+Account inactivity can happen for a number of reasons. Email us at [email protected] and we can help determine what’s needed. If it’s been a while since you last used a SomArt space, an updated walkthrough may be required before you can book again.
–I used SomArts spaces in the past. Do I need to do anything to book again?
+If your account has gone inactive, email [email protected] so we can figure out what’s needed. Returning users who haven’t booked in some time may be required to complete an updated walkthrough before booking again.
–BOOKING
Can I book a space for another artist or let someone use my booking?
+No. The artist who attended the walkthrough must be present for the entire duration of the booking. You cannot reserve space on behalf of someone else or allow others to use the space in your absence.
–Can I book last-minute?
+Bookings must be made at least 24 hours in advance for rehearsals. Labs require at least 48 hours notice, and showings/performances require at least 30 days.
–How far in advance can I book?
+Non-contract rehearsals and labs can be booked up to 60 days in advance. Showings, performances, and contract rehearsals at the Hive have longer lead times — see the full booking table on the website for details.
–SPACE USE & ELIGIBILITY
Can I use the Armory spaces for a performance or ongoing class?
+No. Performances, contract rehearsals, and ongoing classes are only available at the Hive. Armory spaces support rehearsals, labs, and informal showings only.
–My project is fitness-focused or involves martial arts — can I book?
+No. Fitness classes and martial arts are ineligible across all SomArt spaces. The program is specifically designed for performing artists in dance, theatre, and experimental performance.
–Do I need to be a Somerville resident to use SomArt spaces?
+No. All spaces are open to performing artists across the greater Boston metro area.
–SPACE POLICIES
Can I leave trash in the space after my session?
+No. You are expected to leave no trace. All trash — especially food, drink, and container waste — must be taken out with you when you leave.
–I wore my sneakers outside but they’re clean — can I wear them in?
+No. If your shoes have been worn outdoors, they are considered outside shoes regardless of cleanliness. Bare feet, socks, and clean dance shoes only. This policy applies at the Hive and the Armory 3rd floor spaces.
