SomArt is excited to announce an enriching opportunity for choreographers, directors, and producers through our Production Design Cohort. This program is designed to enhance your production design skills specifically for dance, preparing you to plan your next production for success.
Recognizing Our Heroes: Explore the artists who inspire your work.
Preproduction Planning: Learn effective strategies for organizing your production from the ground up.
Assembling Your Production Team: Discover how to build a strong and supportive team.
Scaling Productions: Understand the nuances of adapting your work for various venue sizes.
Integrating Production Elements: Discuss when and how to incorporate props and set pieces into your creative process.
Touring Considerations: Prepare for the logistics of taking your work on the road.
This cohort will be comprised of 7 selected artists. Other artists will also be invited to audit the cohort each time the cohort meets. Selected artists can join at any point in their creative planning. This group will not be required to produce work. The cohort is deigned for professional development without the pressure of being on the same timeline in their creative process.
Workshops will be offered to the greater community outside of the cohort’s meeting time. Selected artists from the cohort will be able to attend these workshops for free. Workshops will cover exploration and best practices of lighting, projection, props and sets, and sound.
Interested artists can apply to the cohort via the application form below. If selected, there is no cost to apply or participate in the program. Additional workshops will also be free for selected artists.
If not selected, you can choose to audit the cohort sessions for $20/session. Workshop costs are TBA for auditing artists.

Applications for participating in the cohort have now closed. We currently are offering participation through audit. This means you can be present for discussion of the topic of each session within the cohort, but more open discussion will be reserved to the last 20 - 30 min. of the session in the interest of time. Join Paul in learning about lighting for dance performance. More about this workshop coming soon! Paul Marr is a freelance lighting designer based in Boston working with numerous dance companies including The Boston Conservatory dance department (BoCo), Tufts University, St. Paul’s School in Concord, NH, and The Boston Center for the Arts to name a few. Some recent designs include Nut/Cracked for The Bang Group at The Dance Hall in Kittery, the opera Summer and Smoke at BoC,o and The Addams Family at St. Paul’s. When not designing, Paul works full-time with Blue Man Group as the Electrics Supervisor where he has worked since 2000. This workshop will be recorded via video.
LROD will be facilitating a ️ workshop on how strategic choreographic design applies to overall vision, time, and scale. This ️ workshop draws on creative-based activations and scaffoldings for dance, performance, and media outcomes with relevant practices. LROD resides in Massachusetts, with a career spanning over 24 years in education, intermedia, and movement. LROD’s sought-after expertise is informed by extensive experience in the field and by presentations and productions at renowned institutions such as Joyce Theater, NYU/Steinhardt, Paramount Theater, Wexner Center of the Arts MetaLab/Berlin, MOCO, and Jacob's Pillow. LROD’s capaciousness exists by re-imaging the boundaries placed on movement in educational settings through research rooted in choreography. LROD’s portfolios include dance, film, design, performance art, intermedia, masks/costumes, dramaturgy, and lighting design, showcased in venues such as the ICA, Harvard Dance Center, Paseo Project, and Wexner Center for the Arts. So you're producing a show and you want to add lighting, costumes, and sound design for the first time. Maybe you know about one of those fields, but the other two are a mystery. How many people do you need to help you? How can you organize that work? What are the right kinds of roles to hire to help you fulfill your vision? In this workshop, we will discuss what different roles like a costume designer, a production electrician, or a production manager do to create and execute a design. We'll talk about how performances big and small structure their technical staff and designers. Learn how to; communicate with sound engineers, choose the right music formats, understand inputs & outputs, balance your tracks for clarity and even playback. We’ll cover tech rehearsals, front-of-house vs. monitors, acoustics, different speaker types for different occasions, cables, mics, backup plans and more so you can perform at your best!
This workshop will lay out how to think about incorporating projection and media into your live performance. Want to see what's possible beyond playing a movie on the backdrop? Join us! Led by media designer and choreographer Callie Chapman. Topics include: Visioning why you would want to use projection/media in the first place. Fundamentals of projection design: light, color, space, scale, placement, integration with other design elements such as lighting, set, and sound. Integrating projection/media into rehearsals. Cueing software and why it's important. Inputs/outputs and systems. Working with a projection designer and operator. Please bring a computer with Isadora installed if you want to be hands on.
