MEET version 4

SomArt Space Posted on July 26, 2024 by adminJuly 10, 2024

Friday, July 26, 2024, 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

MEET version 4

MEET is an improvisational series where artists of different performing art disciplines can meet each other through practice. The night of we will be drawing names from 3 “hats” each focusing on different “spaces”: the sonic space, the visual space, and the embodiment space. There is some room to cross over spaces (for those pan-disciplinary artists out there), but we ask each participating artist to pick the primary space they want to focus on and drop their name in. We will then create groupings by picking the names from the hats to create ensembles (duos, trios, quartets, etc.).

Participants can assume the following:

The MEET space is a place for improvisation and performance. You/we are meant to be seen/heard. (Please plan accordingly)
It’s a place to share space and time with each other and MEET each other through performance practices.
Embodiment, sonic, and visual spaces are to be interpreted as you wish. These are focal points for performers to anchor themselves, but not complete restraints.

Embodiment is centered on expression and form through the body. Dancers, theater artists, movers, and other folks who use their body in their performance practice.

Sonic is centered on the spaces we hear. Musicians, tinkerers, and folks who make noise and silence need apply.

Visual is centered on spaces that we see. Video artists, lighting designers, visual artists, installation artists, and folks who give us color and form apply here.

All participants must show up 1 hour before we start to address any technical setup (yes, even plugging in an amp is technical). There will be no time between sets to set up your stuff. Have it prepared ahead of time.

On site we will have the following amenities to use:
6 floor lights (theatre)
6 channel mixer with 2 speakers
2 projectors: 1 main protector (hung from the ceiling facing the back wall) with a 4 channel mixer, and 1 independent projector that can be “free roaming”
2 6ft folding tables – 1 will be dedicated to video, but the other will be available to use.
25’x43′ sprung dance floor (performers are also free to use the space outside this area)

If you need something outside of this scope, please bring it (including extension cords). There is no one on tech. Please be as self sufficient as possible.

Please note there are no street shoes allowed on the dance floor and all instruments must not mark or damage the floor in any way. Please bring padding for anything that can puncture or pierce the floor. Again, outside the dance floor is also available to be used and is less sensitive to being damaged.

Please note this is a performance-like setting, so bring what you are interested in! Props, costumes, little lights(?). MEET is a great way to meet other artists not in your discipline through jamming (and performing) with each other.

If you are interested, please RSVP below.

You may also come as an observer as well. A donation box will be available in order to cover the space and be split up amongst performers at the end of the night. It’s pay what you can.
