A very special and rare opportunity to see Butoh dancer and Noguchi Taiso master teacher Mari Osanai perform in Boston. She will perform her solo work “Black Moon” with Mask by Shohei Yamashita, original Soundscape by Christophe Charles and lighting by Stephen Petrilli. Max Lord and Sara June will open the show with a new short work titled “an exploration of spareness”.

Mari Osanai was born and raised in Aomori, Japan. She received early training in Classical Ballet and Modern Dance. She later expanded her studies to include Noguchi Taiso (野口体操), Tai Chi, Jazz Dance, and the traditional folk dance of Aomori, Tsugaru Teodori (津軽手踊り). The philosophy and training of Noguchi Taiso have particularly influenced her work. Her dance mentor, Mr. Hironobu Oikawa, also greatly shaped her understanding of movement. Mari Osanai’s unique and complex movements result from an intricate blend of these diverse techniques.

Mari is also teaching 9 hours of Noguchi Taiso workshop open to all humans. Workshop is: Friday December 5th 6-9pm, Sat December 6th 10-1pm, and Sun December 7th 11-2pm at Boston Conservatory.

MAX LORD and SARA JUNE have been making performances together since 2006. Upon their first meeting, the pair quickly formed a shared understanding of the natural compatibility of their respective backgrounds (electronic noise and butoh dance). Their first work, Fern Study, was performed on a lawn at a garden party three months after they met. As Lord and June, they have presented improvisational duets, site-sensitive durational performance works, and historically informed visual-sound installations, often in unique locations. Together, they curated ZEROPLAN a popular salon that presented spontaneous collaborations of electronic sound improvisors with avant-garde movement performers in their loft in Downtown Crossing from 2007 until 2011.
