Cunningham Technique for Intermediate to Advanced Dancers
Every Thursday, 11:00 am - 12:45 pm

This will be Cunningham based modern technique class. I have studied Cunningham technique since 1968, was on the New York teaching faculty, and took Merce’s Company Class from 1989 until the studio closed. I think Cunningham has some of the benefits of ballet, in terms of foot and leg articulation and strength building, but with a full use of the torso and grounded-ness that modern dance offers. It is as challenging for the mind as it is for the body, especially with its rhythmic variety and movement complexity. My classes emphasize rhythmic acuity as I feel rhythm is one of the most expressive aspects of dancing. I also incorporate indeterminancy, that is, choreographic choice making, in the combinations, as a learning tool and an outlet for creativity. The class is designed for the intermediate to advanced dancer. Previous experience with the technique is not required.
