Cunningham Technique for Intermediate to Advanced Dancers

Thursday, February 22, 2024
11:00 am - 12:45 pm
$12.00 - $15.00
This will be Cunningham based modern technique class. I have studied Cunningham technique since 1968, was on the New York teaching faculty, and took Merce’s Company Class from 1989 until the studio closed. I think Cunningham has some of the benefits of ballet, in terms of foot and leg articulation and strength building, but with a full use of the torso and grounded-ness that modern dance offers. It is as challenging for the mind as it is for the body, especially with its rhythmic variety and movement complexity. My classes emphasize rhythmic acuity as I feel rhythm is one of the most expressive aspects of dancing. I also incorporate indeterminancy, that is, choreographic choice making, in the combinations, as a learning tool and an outlet for creativity. The class is designed for the intermediate to advanced dancer. Previous experience with the technique is not required. $15 Regular Rate / $12 [...]

Butoh

Butoh

Monday, February 26, 2024
7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Butoh is an avant-garde movement form first performed by Japanese artists Tatsumi Hijikata and Kazuo Ohno in 1959. Originally conceived as an iconoclastic rejection of contemporary western dance technique, butoh aims to strip away socially acceptable movements and gestures, and encourages students to find and embrace hidden movements that lie buried beneath years of conditioned behavior. In this Moving Target class we will incorporate fragile and vulnerable contexts of the body to explore the “materiality of being.” The class will begin with a somatics-based warm-up, partnering work to explore skeletal, muscular, and fascial layers of movement and energy exchange, and vigorous floor work. Finally, we will utilize butoh-fu, a method of choreography using image-based poetry as grounds for movement generation in brief witnessed improvisations. Dancers at all movement levels are welcome to participate. Email: [email protected] to sign up $10/class
Modern Contemporary Technique

Modern Contemporary Technique

Tuesday, February 27, 2024
10:30 am - 12:00 pm
$12.00 - $17.00
Modern Contemporary Technique class rooted in various modern and evolutionary styles aimed to provide the balance of rigor, challenge, curiosity, and creativity in a technique class geared for professional level dancers. Starting on the ground, awaken connections within the body while starting to interact with the space around you. As we come to standing we root into a solid base and arrive with attention to tensegrity and flow. Moving into spatial patterning within the room and other who surround us we fine tune our sense of time, ebbing and flowing with dynamic shifts through space and with synchronicity. Each class has a similar structure to allow for curiosity to evolve and have a stable base. Creatively, we have space for some interpretation within defined parameters in order to challenge ourselves outside of our comfort zones. Class is 1.5 hours with a half hour before class (starting at 10am) for class [...]
