Dancers’ Space Needs, By the Numbers: What the New Survey Shows

New arts space survey data was published by the City of Somerville this week (Arts Space Needs Assessment Survey, OpenData, July 2026). One finding stood out to us, and we wanted to share it. What This Year’s Survey Shows The survey asked artists across disciplines whether their space needs are currently being met. “The SomArt program has been an incredible resource for Eventual Dance Company. There is a huge lack of rehearsal space for dance artists in greater Boston. The third floor armory space is a critical piece of infrastructure for my work. When we were invited to show our work at Jacob’s Pillow, we had a very short turn around time to rehearse an old piece, and very limited funding. SomArt: Supporting Performing Artists Every Step of the Way — By the Numbers

SomArt provides essential rehearsal and performance space for performing artists in Somerville, uniquely bridging long-standing gaps in the city’s arts infrastructure. Launched in 2021, the municipally run program supports artists from ideation through performance by offering professional, movement-safe spaces designed for a wide range of creative practices. SomArt comprises four dedicated spaces across the city, including three locations at the Armory (191 Highland Ave.) and a large-format performance space at the Hive (561 Windsor St.).
